The joint project of Peri Foundation and the Institute of history, archaeology and ethnography of the Dagestan scientific centre of RAS turned one year old

At the beginning of 2017 within the international program for preservation of cultural heritage Ziyavudin Magomedov's Peri Foundation started digitization of the archive of Oriental manuscripts of the Institute of history, archaeology and ethnography of the Dagestan scientific centre of RAS. For this project, by request of the foundation, a unique large-format scanner was specially developed and delivered to Dagestan. A hi-tech server capable to store 75 terabytes of digitized books was acquired for storage, processing, and cataloguing. For comparison, this volume is equal to 16,000 DVDs or 18.5 million high-quality photos.

For the whole year 2017 there was a laborious work on digitization of Oriental rarities. 493 manuscripts have been so far digitized, with the total number of 113,173 scanned sheets of manuscripts. All these manuscripts were cleaned and had dust removed. Moreover, identification, archeographic description, and database compilation of 900 manuscripts had been carried out. All descriptions are provided in two languages - English and Arabic. For the description of manuscripts was used the experience of creation of electronic catalogues of the largest libraries of the world where Arabic-language manuscripts are stored (the Alexandria, British, Berlin, Jerusalem, Leiden, etc.)

Besides digitization, on May 17, 2017 at the IHAE Peri Foundation opened a unique laboratory on preservation and restoration of ancient monuments of written culture, equipped with the most modern equipment and materials.
