Digital copy of the Dionysius frescoes at Ferapontovo

Digital copying of the unique 16th century frescoes by Dionysius that are in the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin—the main church of the former Ferapontov monastery in Vologda oblast—commenced in the summer of 2016.

Three hundred ancient frescoes, more than six hundred square metres of paintings created by the renowned artist Dionysius and his sons and preserved to this day, will be copied digitally with the latest technology and equipment.

The basic purpose of the project is to preserve and popularize our cultural heritage, as well as to monitor the condition of the murals.

At present we and our partners in this undertaking—specialists in high-definition digital copying from Factum Arte—have begun preparation for an expedition to Ferapontovo.

It is very important for us that the project fulfil an educational purpose.  To that end, we will solicit talented photographers residing in Vologda, Belozersk, Kirillov and vicinity to join in the work at Ferapontovo.   A competition will be announced In October followed by selection of participants for the expedition that will take place in April and May of 2017.
